In 1776 a small group of America's wisest and most respected men
came together in Philadelphia at what is now called Independence Hall, to
decide whether the American Colonists were to remain subjects of the King of
England, or. . . "assume
amongst the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them."
Foundational
to their thinking was the underlying conviction that the 'laws of nature' were the
laws of God.
Fundamental
to these laws were certain... "truths" that
were "self evident", specifically. . . "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their
creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of
happiness."
These
men recognized that God, by nature, and in His
justice, created all men equal in opportunity to choose right
over wrong, blessing over cursing, and heaven over hell; that God had
permanently appropriated these 'unalienable
rights' for men to pursue, all
of which were won through the Cross of Christ when Christ set us free
from the power of sin and death.
To the
thoughtful observer of contemporary American life and government,
these "self
evident truths" are systematically being set
aside, openly rejected, and oppressively replaced by foolish, misguided and
self serving men and women.
As it was their time to throw off the ungodly oppression of a
King and Parliament who repeatedly disdained 'the laws of Nature and of Nature's God', and the
'self evident truths' to
which the colonists, and we as citizens, are entitled, this is our time to do the
same - through the ballot box.
May this day
remind us all that our liberties,
the abundant life
as Jesus desired for all men, and the pursuit
of happiness, come at a great price.
